Amna Elhassan

Bio

Amna Elhassan finds her inspiration in the physical, spiritual and spatial transformative processes experienced by women in her community. Women’s challenges and emancipative struggle are at the core of her work, which crosses several mediums, including printmaking and oil painting. Tackling issues such as the perception of the female body in both the public and private spheres, Elhassan's work adds to the conversation surrounding women's status in today's society. She received a Bachelor of Science in Architecture from Khartoum University in 2010, a master's in architecture from Sapienza University of Rome in 2013 before enrolling in a studio program at Khartoum arts training center (2017-2019). All these educational experiences led her to the path of working as a full-time visual artist.

In 2022 Elhassan presented a solo exhibition titled "Deconstructed Bodies: In Search Of Home" at Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt (Germany) in conjunction with a fully illustrated catalogue published by the Institute for Contemporary Art & Transfer (ICAT), Hamburg and Schirn Kunsthalle Frankfurt. Another solo exhibition was at the gallery of HFBK University of Fine Arts Hamburg, Hamburg (Germany). Elhassan has Also participated in exhibitions at Egypt Int’l Art fair, Cairo, Egypt (2021); FNB Joburg Art Fair online broadcasting from Johannesburg, South Africa (2020); others at Afriart Gallery, Kampala, Uganda (2020); Journées d’Art Contemporain de Carthage JACC, Tunis, Tunisia (2019); Khartoum Art Center, Khartoum, Sudan (2018); Rashid Diab Arts Center, Khartoum, Sudan (2017); National Museum of Sudan, Khartoum, Sudan (2016); and Yalla Khartoum, Khartoum, Sudan (2015). In the summer semester of 2022, she was invited as a guest lecturer at the HFBK in Hamburg where she was teaching a class titled “Art During Times Of Crisis”. She lives and works in Khartoum, Sudan.
